Staying Healthy After Pregnancy: Signs

Take Me To Post Comment Form

When you were pregnant, your health was your focus. The same is should be true during the postpartum stage, but all too often, women put themselves out of mind. It’s normal to experience mild discomfort after giving birth, but you need to keep an eye on the way you’re feeling. Certain symptoms should never be ignored.
Postpartum Health: Important to Pay Attention
It's important that your health be monitored in the months following your pregnancy, especially if you had preeclampsia. A study published in the medical journal Hypertension found that preeclampsia causes many women to suffer from ongoing high blood pressure.
There are other serious risks following pregnancy as well, especially if you’re older. Waiting until later in life to have children is growing more popular thanks to the ability to freeze eggs, but women over the age of 40 should be aware of the increased risks of heart attack and stroke. This isn't to say you shouldn't try for a baby if you're older, just that it's important to know all the facts before you make a decision.
Listening to Your Body: Signs to Watch Out For
Paying attention to how you feel is a necessary aspect of new parenthood. You must look after your own health so you can do the best job possible of caring for your infant. Sometimes, headaches are headaches, and stomachaches are just that, but if something is wrong, spotting the signs early is the best way to ensure your health is protected. Listening to your gut is important too. If something feels wrong, it can’t hurt to get checked out.

A Bad Headache

If you experience a bad headache lasting more than a few hours, seek medical attention right away. If the headache occurs within 72 hours of the birth, you might be suffering from preeclampsia. It could also be a side effect of stress or simply a virus, but it’s important to make sure.

Heavy Bleeding

There’s no need to alarm yourself over a minimal amount of bleeding. Seek medical attention immediately if you’re:

Using more than one pad each hour.
Experiencing dizziness.
Passing large blood clots.
Feeling your heart beat at an irregular or rapid pace.

A Serious Fever

It’s possible you picked up a bug from the hospital, but a fever could also indicate a serious infection. Either way, it’s smart to get examined by a doctor right away.

Stomach Pain

If you experience stomach pain, especially in the top half of your abdomen, it’s wise to get checked out. If the pain is accompanied by other symptoms of illness and malaise, you might be suffering from a condition that affects your blood and liver function.
Sanity in Stressful Times: Postpartum Self-care and Health
Taking a holistic approach will give you the best chance of feeling energetic and happy during the first few months with your baby. If you’re breastfeeding, it’s even more important to supply your body with nutrition. Whole foods like leafy greens, grass fed beef bone broth, and avocado are all excellent staples in your postpartum diet. Any nutrient-dense foods will benefit your body, but your baby might be sensitive to certain things, so you’ll have to adjust your diet accordingly.
Self-care is another important aspect of staying sane as a new mom. It’s difficult to carve out time, but you can make up for that by being kind to yourself as possible. Forgive yourself for small mistakes. Stay conscious of your breathing. Don’t be afraid to ask for as much help is available to you. Keep a positive mindset as much as possible. All of these practices will help reduce your stress levels and keep your body and mind healthy.
