APPEARANCE
A true sports car is a low slung, two-seater roadster convertible with a fabric top or a removable hardtop and a manual transmission. This is the car your mother warned you never to get into because she did not think you would live to get out of it.
Triumph and MG first saw this niche, and the Triumph TR6 and the MG Midget were the first attempts to crack the American affordable sports car market, with limited success. In recent years, affordable sports cars have gained a stronger foothold within the American market.

AFFORDABILITY
For years, most sports car lovers could only gaze from afar and wish for one of those sleek, high-performing mechanical beasts. They were just too expensive!
Even if you could come up with the money to buy one, the maintenance could literally take your last dime. If it ever needed a major repair, which all cars do sooner or later, the parts costs were way beyond outrageous, not to mention the diagnosis and labor costs involved!
Over the last ten or so years, the American sports car market has finally begun to fill the vast void between more expensive models and their affordable counterparts. Now, more people can buy and enjoy them. Of course, the term, affordable, can mean different dollar amounts to different people. Under $40,000 is the affordability gauge in mind here.
The reliable Honda s2000 is the first to come to mind. It was the first true, affordable roadster with both good looks and performance. The 2018 version is priced between $28,000 and $35,000 according to. That is a good, smart buy for a quality performance roadster especially when Corvettes cost twice as much.
Along with the Mazda MX5 and the Fiat 124 Spider, all three are under $40,000. The Mazda MX5 offers a version slightly over $40k at $45,800. These are the three leading candidates for the category of affordable, two-seater, convertible sports cars here in the U.S. right now.

PERFORMANCE
Originally produced from 1999 to 2009, Honda had ceased production. When they restarted production in 2017, they chose the Honda plant in Ohio to make it along with the NSX.
The revived and revised edition comes with a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that generates over 300 horsepower.
Can you imagine what over 300 horsepower can feel like in a car that light? It weighs less than 3,000 pounds. Just two words can describe this combination of horsepower and light weight: extremely fast. Perhaps one could even say way beyond extremely fast to, oh say, sudden!
The Mazda MX 5 at is also an impressive two-seater convertible. According to Ford-Mazda, it is the world’s best selling sports car. It has also added an electronically powered hardtop roof. This is a feature usually only seen with the most expensive roadsters.
The MX-5 comes with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine that has 155 horsepower. It also has a six-speed manual transmission option. For most sports car enthusiasts, six speed manual transmissions add to the overall feel associated with driving a fast roadster.
According to Nicholas Maronese, a writer for Mazda MX News and Reviews, the 2019 model is scheduled for a 26 horsepower increase bringing it closer to 200 total horsepower.
The Fiat 124 Spider is the Italian flavored contribution to this select group of affordable two-seater roadsters. Its engine bay is filled with a 1.4 liter, Multi-Air turbo powered four cylinder in a rear wheel drive setup according to
What do they say? More air means more fuel burned more quickly. That means more speed for going down the road faster. The suspension setup for the 124 Spider, like the suspensions of the Mazda and the Honda, give it that stable, race car feel at the wheel.
For the more mechanically-minded, the Spider suspension includes a double wishbone front with rear stabilizing bars and an electronic steering system.
