Getting to the gym sounds like a pretty simple task. However, there are so many people who find it difficult to get there for their daily exercise. A matter of simple transportation can mean minutes to hours in traffic which can be unmotivating in itself. By the time you actually arrive at the gym, your energy is almost completely depleted. It certainly is a commitment for those who choose to go and requires a large degree of discipline. It's not that people don't want to stay healthy and get in shape. Those who have children, tightly scheduled jobs, or simply don't live near a gym can more than likely attest to the difficulty in going regularly.
Nothing But You
Anyone can get an effective workout at home without all the exercise equipment at the gym. All that is really needed for a good workout is yourself and the right application. For example, a good calisthenics workout can give you the same burn and results as the treadmills and weights in the gym. The human body has enough weight itself to qualify as an alternative opposes to using other means like dumbbells. Not everyone has weights or standard workout equipment, but everyone does have their body which is good enough for a calisthenic workout and getting toned.
In short, a calisthenic workout includes an assortment of gross motor movements such as running, pushing, pulling, standing, etc. Very little to no equipment is used for the workout. Therefore, it relies solely on bodyweight. Squats and lunges are just two types of calisthenics exercises that engage a wide variety of major muscle groups in the lower portion of the body. Some more popular exercises are burpees, mountain climbers, and leg lifts. While doing the exercises, people are able to endure the weight of their bodies while getting toned and building muscle. If getting toned isn't the overall goal here, there are other workout plans that do make the process of weight loss a lot less strenuous.
HIIT Workouts
Everyone's goal might not be aimed towards building muscle and toning. HIIT or High-intensity interval training is a common way to burn fat. With this high-intensity interval training, individuals can burn more fat in less time which would make 30 minutes of HIIT on the treadmill a quicker option to losing weight compared to an hour of running on the treadmill. High-intensity interval training consists of alternating intervals of short-bursts of intense cardio followed by active recovery exercise. For example, a HIIT workout could include 1 minute of sprinting on the treadmill followed by 30 seconds of walking. Then, you would do this alternation for a total of however many minutes the total workout is.
The reason HIIT is so effective is that it produces an afterburn effect called EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) which essentially means the body has an increased need for oxygen, especially during recovery. In other words, HIIT boosts your metabolism and can actually increase testosterone levels which are good news for the muscles as well.
Gym equipment is not a requirement when it comes to building muscles or burning fat. It's understandable that many people don't have the time or luxury to go to a gym on a regular basis. Getting up, getting dressed, and getting there is a lot even without the idea of having children or crazy work hours. As people, we gravitate towards the easier option in many cases or what is most convenient for us. To wake up and not have to purchase equipment or leave the house sounds much simpler. The results one would get at the gym really need nothing but your own body in order to be achieved. Major muscle groups all over the body can be engaged and exercised through the proper high-intensity interval training and/or calisthenics exercises. From that perspective, our body is indeed our gym.
