6 Car Maintenance Things You Can Do At Home

In this day and age, many people are looking to save money anywhere they can. One easy way to save some is to do you own minor car maintenance yourself. The average car repair cost is $356. While many jobs should be done by a certified technician, there are many jobs that can easily be performed by anyone. Some of these jobs will save you hundreds of dollars per job and save you potentially thousands in the long run.

Changing Your Oil And Oil Filter

While starting with one of the most common DIY car maintenance tasks. Changing the engine oil and oil filter. While it's simple, there are some safety procedures to follow. Oil should be changed every 3,000 miles and synthetic oil can last for 5,000 miles. While waiting longer than this is bad for your engine, do not change it too soon either. Just make your sure you recycle your used oil afterwards.

Checking Your Tire Pressure

This should be checked once a week. Your tire pressure can drop up 1 psi each week. So if you check it once per month, that can be 4psi lost which will negatively affect fuel economy, handling, tire life, and the health of the suspension. Weather plays a part in this, so expect to lose 1psi per 10 degree drop in temperature.

Changing a Flat Tire

The most common do it yourself job. This is one of those basic jobs that everyone is expected to know how to do. No one cares about your other DIY maintenance you can do if you can't change a flat tire quickly and safely.

Tire Rotation

This should be done once every 5,000 miles. The tire rotation pattern varies for different types of vehicles. There are side to side, front to back, and different X patterns.

Trucks with a spare such as Nissan Frontier, which was voted the best midsize truck by J.D. Power, rotates in the spare to left rear tire, with one of the front tires replacing the spare.

Replacing You Air Filter And Cabin Air Filter

While these are two completely different types of filters, it's best to group replacement of them together. Research shows 18% of people have dirty air filters.

The engine air filter is responsible for sending clean air to your engine so it can mix with the fuel. A dirty air filter results in a loss in horsepower, poor fuel economy and sluggish performance.

The cabin air filter is usually behind your glove compartment, in the console area, or in the cowling, and it screens the outside air that enters your vehicle. Both filters need to be changed every 12,000 miles, or once per year, whichever comes first.

An easy trick to know if you need to replace it is to hold a shop light behind the filter. If the filter blocks 50% or more of the light, replace it. You can also just buy a reusable air filter, just clean it at the prescribed intervals.

Replacing Light Bulbs

This can be an easy way to needlessly spend money on a simple job that anyone can do. For many vehicles, all you'll need is a screwdriver and gloves.

Gloves are necessary because the natural oil on your fingers can ruin your brand new bulbs. When installing headlights, make sure they are properly angled before you go for a drive.

Conclusion

There are plenty of jobs you can do, but there are some that are very common and can be unexpectedly costly for certain cars and trucks. You should always put safety first and you should still have someone close by in case of an emergency. You won't save any money if you end up in the hospital.
