Before there were app stores there was MobiHand and Handango. Although there is a noticeable decline in the traffic for both websites since the launch of the new app stores for each device, both websites are still brining in a good amout of app buyers every month. Here are the 2009 website statistics from Compete to give you a better idea of how many:

As you can see 185,121 unique visitors for November 2009 for Handango and 65,125 unique visitors for MobiHand do present a good opportunity for getting exposure to a total of 250,246 potential app buyers per month. Also, keep in mind about these numbers that Compete gets these numbers from a sample of only 2 million Internet users. So these numbers give you an idea but the actual numbers can be even higher, and most likely they are.

These two websites are effective for BlackBerry, Nokia, Palm and more recently Android Apps. iPhone apps can be promoted here as well. However for MobiHand the selection of iPhone apps are not very good and Handango promotes iPhone apps on their website but they are using the iTunes affiliate program. This means that when a user is on their website and clicks on one of the apps they are taken directly to the iTunes Store. You can still gain exposure this way as well as sales if the user completes the purchase process through the iTunes App store.

To sum it up, these are both great marketing mediums to get your apps infront of new app buyers and even generate more revenue. If anyone has used either website and would like to share their experience please feel free to leave a comment.
